Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 4 volumes, just back from the book-bindery. Newly cased in full green cloth with large volume numbers 1-4 on the spines, and the word 'Quixote' stamped boldly in gold on the front covers. New headbands and endpapers. This professional binding has resurrected the very good text blocks (covers were… all absent when we acquired it) in an attractive (and interesting) set for the shelf and for use. Also, we are advised by the binder, it is a very small matter to remove these case bindings and return to your own binder for whatever style of binding you prefer. 4 volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 dated 1700. Volumes 3 and 4 dated 1703. This is the first of the London: Sam Buckley editions. Volume 1 has unpaginated prefaces and dedications, then 327 pages + single advertisement on verso of last page. Volume 2 continues pagination to page 660. Volume 3 has 342 pages. Volume 4 continues to pagination to page 722, then jumps to pages numbered 221-232. This is a typographical error in the printing, as the text and story continue correctly through this mistake in the pagination. (A close comparison between this edition and others reveals compounding mistakes in the chapter numbering of this edition, as well - they are numbered 70. 69. 71.73. 74. (but the text remains correct). 15 folding plates -- Volume 1 has plates at pages 26, 134, 146 (which is misnumbered 126), 176, 235. Volume 2 has plates at 563 and 596 (upper corner chipped off, not affecting image). Volume 3 has plates at 101, 162, 259, 291, 339. Volume 4 has plates at 400, 628, and 651. The text blocks are tight and clean, with some (even) fading from age. Margins are trimmed close, especially at the top where some of the headers themselves are trimmed. The volumes measure just under 4 inches by just over 6 inches. Don Quixote was originally published in 1605 and 1615, in Spanish. The first English translation was in 1620. This version with Peter (Pierre) Motteux's name on the title page beneath Cervantes, was first published in 1700 and 1703 (which is what we have here) and then reprinted several times in the next decades. The Motteux translation was vastly superior to the 17th century ones, and remained in favor and in print for nearly 300 years. The title page take pains to credit the translation to 'several hands' and to name Motteux as the publisher, but Motteux himself was almost certainly the main translator. Later editions of this set can be found with 16 plates -- this set has only 15 (unless I've somehow missed something despite careful and repeated collation.) Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. First Edition. London: G. Pearch, 1775. Here is a stunning, exceptional, and rare set of collected poetry in a fine binding from the late 18th Century. This is an expansion of the collection published by Robert Dodsley (1703-1764) in 1758. (Or, perhaps Pearch is just piggy-backing… on Dodsley's popularity; he published a two-volume edition in 1768 and expanded it here seven years later.) Quite rare; Quercus has found only the British Library holding copies. These are bound in lovely smooth calf, tooled and banded on the spines, filled with gilt. Red spine label ("Pearch's Collection"). These are ASSOCIATION COPIES. Blindstamped with the Coat of Arms of Trinity College Dublin on the front covers. In addition, there is a Printed and Signed label affixed to the front paste-downs indicating the books were awarded as a prize by Trinity in 1777. Clean texts, with bright laid paper and marbled endpapers. 317, 316, 324, and 316 pages, all indexed in the rear. Volume Four includes an errata page and 2 pages of publisher's adverts. Minor splits at the spines, holding nicely. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

It was by far the most detailed such record to that date. His brother Arnold, the famous Hebrew scholar, supplied most of the information for the Natural History. He was resident in Dublin until the outbreak of the Bloody Rebellion of 1641. Sir William and Sir Richard Parsons also contributed to the work and it was from them that the author obtained much of his information relating to the rocks and minerals of Ireland.
