Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Signed by the author - no inscription. 2nd printing (May 2004). The book provides a stark, harrowing look at the civilian toll of the 1860s Central Plains conflicts. It focuses heavily on the pioneer perspective, reconstructing events primarily through 19th-century government Indian depredation claims. The narrative centers on Susanna Alderdice, a frontier settler who was captured alongside her children by a band of Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. Signed by Author(s).

The Indian wars on the Central Plains the area roughly between the Arkansas River to the south and the Platte River to the north " emanates at the November 29, 1864 Sand Creek Massacre. The chapters here tell in great depth the incidents before and after the Sand Creek Massacre, ending with the destruction of the Cheyenne Dog Soldier village at Summit Springs July 11, 1869. Beginning with the Hungate Massacre near Denver June 11, 1864, the final chapter reports on efforts to find the lost grave of Susanna Alderdice, killed at her rescue at Summit Springs.
