Two former owners' signatures in ink and pencil on title page. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, a few small marks and smudges, and the signatures on title page. Covers are clean and intact overall except for some darkening (most noticeable on spine), fraying to head and tail of spine, tiny speckles and rubbing, and moderate wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. This is the 1882 collection of Concord Lectures on Philosophy. It was part of a lyceum-like lecture series that was active from 1879-1888 at the Concord School of Philosophy, a philosophical school founded by Amos Bronson Alcott and other Transcendentalists. The 1882 lectures herein were collected and arranged by Raymond L. Bridgman, revised by several of the lecturers, and approved by the Concord School faculty. The 1882 lecture series was held over the course of twenty-four days. The lecturers for the 1882 series were Amos Bronson Alcott, Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, W. T. Harris, H. K. Jones, George H. Howison, John Albee, James McCosh, Julia Ward Howe, C. A. Bartol, Joel Benton, Martha P. Lowe, Alexander Wilder, Ednah D. Cheney, R. A. Holland, C. E. Garman, R. G. Hazard, Elizabeth P. Peabody, John Watson, and George P. Lathrop. The first meeting of the Concord School was held at the study of the Alcotts' family home, Orchard House in 1879. Many of the lectures featured reminiscences by Transcendentalists, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, and past Transcendentalist writings such as those by Henry David Thoreau. The Concord School gave its last meeting in 1888 with the passing the Amos Bronson Alcott.
