This reprint is limited to 400 copies only. The text is in French with a 107-page introduction in English by Roger Bour. This reprint is from the SSAR series "Facsimile Reprints in Herpetology." Erpétologie Générale has never been reprinted, yet it remains of continuing value to a broad community of academic zoologists, museum and zoo curators, and conservationists, and especially to herpetologists working in developing countries. As this set is in 6 volumes, extra postage will be required to ship the set.

Karl Patterson Schmit wrote: "It was the crowning work of a century of herpetoloigcla studies". The value of this full-size facsimile work is that it is not only complete but carefully edited for clarity. The 120 finely exectuted plates are reprinted in both colored and uncolored states because the original coloring sometimes obscured details of scutellation. The volume have nearly 7,000 pages. Limited to 500 sets. It will be essential not only for herpetologists, but also for the serious student on conservation.

But unfortunately he had no possibility to make full use of his gifts.…His taxonomic work in Munich was thwarted because of his rivalry with Johann Baptist Spix, and his 'war chest', nearly 400 plates drawn and painted during his stay in Paris, remained unpublished due to lack of funds. During the last ten years of his short life Oppel had by necessity an 'ordinary' life without brilliance, giving lessons and painting or engraving objects of natural history for some colleagues.This volume examines Oppel's work on Crocodilians, particularly his illustrations. Oppel's illustrations are compared to contemporary and modern illustrations of the same species with special emphasis on their scientific accuracy. In addition, a complete facsimile of Tiedemann, Oppel, & Liboschitz (1817) Naturgeschichte der Amphibien. Erstes Heft. Gattung Krokodil is reprinted, including the fifteen plates which were published separately by the authors. This book and it's atlas, are exceedingly rare and have not been reprinted previously.
