Campbell is a renowned Métis author, playwright, filmmaker, activist, and Elder; Campbell is best known for her first book, the autobiographical memoir HALF-BREED, which continues to be taught in schools across Canada, and which continues to inspire generations of indigenous women and men; Campbell is a fluent speaker of four languages: Cree, Michif, Saulteaux, and English. In her landmark 1973 memoir Halfbreed, Maria Campbell wrote about growing up in a Métis community in Saskatchewan during a period when Métis people experienced widespread poverty, discrimination, and marginalization. The book helped bring Métis history and identity to a wider Canadian audience and became one of the most influential works in Indigenous Canadian literature. The title Halfbreed reflects a term that was historically used, often as a slur, against Métis people. Campbell deliberately used it to confront the prejudice and racism that Métis communities faced. Today, "Métis" is the accepted term, while "half-breed" is generally considered outdated and offensive when used outside its historical or literary context. For Campbell, Métis identity is not simply a matter of mixed ancestry.
