Very Good in Dustjacket. 0080284949. 256 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Scotland Literature Literary Criticism World Literature. DESCRIPTION - Studies of: A Scots Quair, The Silver Darlings, And The Cock Crew, The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, Tunes Of Glory, From Scenes Like These, Greenvoe, Docherty, Fergus Lamont, & Lanark. Isobel Murray and Bob Tait write: 'We looked for a selection of novel out over the past fifty years, with the intention of highlighting at least some of the main literary preoccupations in Scotland during that time. We found in the first place considerable variety. There is great technical variety, from Lewis Grassic Gibbon to Alasdair Gray. The writers make use of a widely diverse range of personal backgrounds and occupations. Their work reflects the cultural diversity of Scotland in terms of social class, geographical locations and the historical settings and themes they are concerned with. It sometimes seems there is not one Scotland but many. These novelists may not have quite different readerships in mind but there are important differences in intention and emphasis. Yet, for all the diversity, there are significant recurrent preoccupations, with the fragility or absence of social bonds or religious beliefs, or with painful historical experiences. And all these writers resist cliche and sentimentality with a sense of comedy and irony in the bleakest of circumstances: testimony to an ongoing renaissance in Scottish fiction.' inventory #12121.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Thus. First published in 1914, this is a reissue with new introduction of 1979. Some edge wear and creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some slight yellowing to white parts of jacket, corners slightly bruised. price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy of quite a scarce book. 450pp. A leech, a pirate, a predator, an anti Christ, a public benefactor and the fisherman's friend, such is Gillespie Strang in this remarkably powerful Scottish novel. Gillespie is the harsh prophet of the new breed of Scottish entrepreneur, prepared to use any means to achieve his insatiable ambition amongst the nineteenth century fishing communities of the west coast. John MacDougall Hay (1881-1919), was born and raised in Tarbert, Loch Fyne, on which he based the setting for 'Gillespie'. A Church of Scotland minister, his knowledge of such communities and his sombre vision of good and evil shape this, his finest novel. Sadly, Hay died of tuberculosis aged only 38.
