Previous owner inked name on front cover is Murray Barnson Emeneau (1904-2005), emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Cailfornia, Berkeley. He contributed to many areas of linguistics and allied disciplines, but helped create two fields of discipline: the study of the minority Dravidian languages of India and the study of what he called 'language areas'. Prof. Emeneau created this field through work that includes grammars of Kolami and Toda, published in 1955 and 1984, and a Kota text collection published in three volumes from 1944 to 1946.
