Bibós Essay von 1948 steht unter dem Eindruck der Judenvernichtung im Zweiten Weltkrieg, der allein in Ungarn über eine halbe Million Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Bibó fragt nach den Gründen des moralischen Versagens der ungarischen Gesellschaft, die zum Großteil die Deportationen stillschweigend akzeptierte, während eine Minderheit sie sogar aktiv unterstützte. Bibó verband seine Untersuchung mit einer historischen Theorie Mitteleuropas und sah in den gescheiterten Revolutionen und gewaltsam abgebrochenen liberalen Bestrebungen den Ursprung jener Deformationen, die diesen Raum so anfällig für den Faschismus und Antisemitismus gemacht haben. Diese Fehlentwicklung zu analysieren und zu ihrer Korrektur beizutragen war Ziel des Schaffens István Bibós.
