Hogarths iEuvre ?didaktisch-satirische Kompositionen, Porträts, Historienbilder, volkstümliche Karikaturen, Buchillustrationen ? enthüllt mit seltener Eindringlichkeit Gesicht und Geschmack der zeitgenössischen Gesellschaft, die von dem Bündnis der aufsteigenden Bourgeoisie mit der Aristokratie geprägt wurde. Hogarth arbeitete für sehr verschiedene soziale Schichten, vor allem aber fühlte er sich aufgerufen, mit Hilfe der bildenden Kunst die Lebensweise des bürgerlichen Menschen auszurichten und zu formen. Anerkennung erlangte er durch die nicht selten in mehr als tausend Exemplaren verbreiteten moralisierenden Kupferstichserien »Der Lebenslauf einer Dirne«, »Der Lebenslauf eines Wüstlings«, »Die Heirat nach der Mode« und »Fleiß und Faulheit«, in denen er seinen Zeitgenossen die puritanischen Tugenden pries und die Folgen aristokratischer Sittenlosigkeit, des Müßiggangs und der Ausschweifungen vor Augen führte.
