Ad accomunare, nel libro, questi temi così vasti ed eterogenei è il punto di partenza da cui ciascuno di essi viene sviluppato: il mondo dell'antica filosofia greca, concepita sia da Berti sia da Grecchi come fonte originaria delle «domande fondamentali» dell'uomo occidentale e come tentativo di elaborazione di alcune grandiose soluzioni che continuano a esercitare un fascino intramontabile. La filosofia greca fa da sfondo anche alle considerazioni svolte da Berti e da Grecchi intorno al pensiero di Kant, di Hegel e di Marx.
