Erste Ausgabe der Hauptschrift in der "Affaire Kornmann", die zunächst nichts war als eine alltägliche Ehebruchsgeschichte, bis sich Beaumarchais "als Akt idealer Humanität" in die leidige Angelegenheit einmischte und sich auf die Seite der des Ehebruchs beschuldigten und von der Polizei eingesperrten Ehefrau stellte. Gegen Beaumarchais als den gefährlichsten Gegner des Bankiers Kornmann wendet nun der scharfzüngige Advokat Bergasse, ein Parteigänger Messmer's, seine Anklageschrift, die damit sofort auf großes Interesse stieß, gesteigert noch durch eingestreute Reflexionen über die Schäden und Willkür der Polizeiverwaltung und andere gesellschaftspolitisch hochbrisante Themen. Zudem erschien die Schrift kurz vor der Premiere von Beaumarchais' Oper "Tatare", als alle Welt sowieso auf den Dichter blickte.
