Dabei werden Spannungen zwischen verschiedenen Generationen sowie Debatten uber geeignete Theorien, Methoden und Begriffe beleuchtet. Neben kanonisierten Schlusselschriften fliessen auch lebensgeschichtliche Texte wie Briefe, Tagebucher, Erinnerungen und Autobiografien ein, viele davon aus Archiven. Die Studie zeigt, dass es hinter der deutschen Geschichtserinnerung an den Holocaust eine judische Aussenseiter-Perspektive gab, deren wissenschaftlicher Wert lange Zeit nicht anerkannt wurde, was besonders an der Ablehnung der Arbeiten von Joseph Wulf deutlich wird, die hier erstmals rehabilitiert werden. 3. durchgesehene Auflage mit Personenregister.
