ii, 68pp, 14 bw illustrations on fold out plates 21x14, unbound Covers and title page missing, contents page missing substantial pieces only slightly impacting text, edges of plates rough, a couple of pencil marks. Damaged copy of Rumford's classic work. The pagination matches the description of the third edition, but without th…e title page and imprint it is difficult to be sure. Rumford (he became a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1791 in recognition of his work for the Prince-Elector of Bavaria) was a polymath, whose achievements ranged from furnaces to nutritious soup for the poor. Born in America, he was a Loyalist in the War of Independence, and ended up in London, then Paris and Munich. As well as solving the problems of inefficient fireplaces he helped to found the Royal Institute, and - apparently - invented thermal underwear. One of the great Enlightenment figures.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offprint from: Bibliotheque Britannique, Sciences et Arts. Vol. 5 [Geneva, 1797]. 8vo (199 x 127 mm). iv, 104 pp. One folding engraved plate. Printed on blue paper. Inscribed and signed by Rumford on title-page ("to the right honorable Lord Sheffield, from his most obedient servant R…umford"). Provenance: Lord Sheffield (dedication by Rumford on title-page); Walter Scott Thompson (his bookplate to front pastedown). Later cloth (extremities little rubbed). Internally only little age-toned, title page with glued residue of flyleaf paper at gutter margin (not affecting text), inscription slightly trimmed at top and fore-margin. ---- DSB XIII, p.351. FIRST EDITION of Rumford's essay on the propagation of heat in fluids. Rumford is best known for his contributions to the theory of heat. At the end of the 18th century the predominant theory of heat was the so-called caloric theory, according to which heat was a fluid substance that flowed into bodies when they were heated and flowed out of them as they cooled. The success of this theory in explaining then known phenomena is reflected in many terms, such as "heat flow" and "calorie," still used by physicists today. "In 1797 he published the description of a device for proving gunpowder, which was generally accepted as the standard method by both the British and the Bavarian armies. It was during his investigations of cannon that he was impressed by the large amount of heat generated in cannon barrels by the explosion of gunpowder even when no ball was being fired. He was thus led to accept the vibratory theory of heat, which he championed actively all his life. Thompson¿s most famous experiment in this area was his demonstration of the process of boring cannon with a dull drill, which he carried out in the arsenal at Munich. Because the heat generated in this process seemed limitless, he reasoned that a fluid caloric did not exist. Thompson carried out many other experiments to demonstrate the reasons for his disbelief in the caloric theory. He unsuccessfully attempted to determine whether heat had weight, which would be an attribute of a fluid; he weighted, at different temperatures, fluids that had markedly different specific heats and heats of fusion. He studied the anomalous expansion of fusion. He studied the anomalous expansion of water between 4°C and 0°C to show that the concept that thermal expansion is caused by fluid caloric taking up space was false. He never realized the connection between heat and energy, although he did carry on experiments to demonstrate spontaneous interdiffusion of different density liquids at constant temperature, and he postulated that fluids are in constant random motion." (DSB). Inscribed by Author(s).

"Sur la manière dont la chaleur se propage dans les fluides; sur une loi remarquable qui s'observe dans la condensationde l'eau par le froid, lorque ce liquide approche du terme de la congelation.avec des conjectures sur la cause finale de la salure de l'Ocean"…and other papers in pp 97-198, with one folding plate in "Bibliotheque Britannique, ou Recuell extrait des Ouvrages Anglais periodiques et autres." Geneva, Imp. De la Bibliotheque Britannique, 1797, volume 5, 392pp and three folding plates and tables; in the Science et Arts series. Paper-covered boards and spine. There is a little wear and rubbing to the boards, though overall the binding is quite nice. VERY GOOD. The text is very crisp and bright. [++] The "Bibliotheque Britannique" provided translations of significant and important papers (mostly extracts, or reviews, though with some complete article translations) that were written primarily in English and then translated into French to reach a wider audience in Europe many of these translations were the first exposure to the papers on the Continent. Many of the leading lights were published here including Jenner, Davy, Thomson, Wollaston, Waterhouse, Gay-Lussac, Pictet, and many others. The journal was active 1796-1815 after which it changed direction somewhat and renamed "Bibliotheque Universelle". For more on the significance on the BB, see: "The Transmission of Culture in Western Europe, 1750-1850: Papers Celebrating the Bicentenary of the Foundation of the 'Bibliothèque britannique' (1796-1815) in Geneva" by David Bickerton and Judith Proud.[++] On RUMFORD: "Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford, 1753-1814, American) describes experiments leading to his discovery of convection currents in the essay "On the propagation of heat in fluids." He proceeds to examine the possible role of convection in the world ocean, concluding from his own theoretical work and from the 1751 deep water temperature measurements of Henry Ellis that the existence of cold water at depth in the tropics implies a meridional circulation transporting deep water from the polar regions toward the equator. Water cooled at the surface in high latitudes gets denser and hence descends. This cold, dense water spreads along the sea floor toward the equator, forcing a countercurrent from equator to pole at the surface. Thompson furthermore supplements this large-scale model of ocean circulation with an explanation of how in high latitudes a smaller scale vertical circulation can take place which results in significant heat transfer to the atmosphere: cold winds cool surface waters, which consequently descend, initiating a vertical circulation that brings to the surface warmer waters which in turn transfer heat to the atmosphere, cool, and descend, continuing the vertical circulation pattern."--Claire Parkinson, Breakthroughs, 1797. [++] Also in this volume is a review/observation of James HUTTON's great classic "Theory of the Earth, etc. Theorie de la Terre, avec les preuves et des eclairisemens, en quartre parties."(published in 1796) on pp 53-73 and 262-273. [++] Rumford makes a second appearance in the volume in "Count Rumford's Experimental Essays, etc. Essais politiques, economiaues et physiques du Comte Rumford. Vie essai, sur la conduite de Feu et l'economie du Combustion" pp 201-244, pp 297-355.
