They received over 1,200 completed surveys. In 1680, amid the political turbulence of the Exclusion Crisis, two London booksellers, Benjamin Harris and Francis Smith, were separately tried at Guildhall for publishing seditious libels. Harris stood accused of printing and selling An Appeal from the Country to the City, a tract urging defence of the King's person, liberty, and Protestant religion, but framed in terms that alarmed the authorities. Smith, a veteran of dissenting print culture, faced similar charges for circulating material deemed inflammatory and politically destabilising. Both trials reflected the Restoration government's tightening grip on the press, as fears of Catholic succession and popular agitation converged. The proceedings reveal the precarious position of booksellers as intermediaries between public sentiment and political scrutiny, and the growing use of libel law to silence opposition. 18 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history.
