In original tan printed wrappers, 47 pp., 2 black and white photographic plates, and very large folding color soil survey map of Washtenaw County at rear. The map, based on U. S. Geological Survey topographic coverage, shows cultural details (individual buildings, roads, railr…oads, etc.) in addition to soil types and distribution within the region, necessary for delineating important and desirable agricultural areas. Descriptions and characteristics of soil classifications shown on the map are provided in the report together with information about principal and lesser crops grown at the time of the survey. An early edition and possibly the first soil survey of Washtenaw County. Later soil surveys provide more maps and finer details but lack the visual appeal, simplicity, and historical content of this earlier large color map. *** Condition: Complete as issued. Ex-library with ink stamp and call numbers on front wrapper, else the booklet is internally clean with no other markings. Removed from bound volume with roughness and chipping to wrappers along the bound edge, loose or detaching pages, and stitch holes along the left margin not affecting the map. The map has a couple of short opening tears and is bright, crisp, and clean.

These volumes document the 19th century history of geological investigations, the physical features and geomorphology of the State, its geological formations, mineral resources, and paleontology. Maryland rock formations range in age from Precambrian to Pleistocene, and produce a noteworthy assortment and diversity of fossils: stromatolites, sponges, corals, trilobites and other arthropods, crinoids, brachiopods, mollusks, fishes, dinosaur remains, shark teeth, whale bones, mammoth and mastodon skeletons, and more. Volumes in this set include: VOLUME ONE (1897), with 539 p. and 17 plates; CAMBRIAN-ORDOVICIAN (1919), with 424 p. and 58 plates; SILURIAN (1923), with 794 p. and 67 plates; DEVONIAN (IN THREE VOLUMES) (1913), with 1436 p. and 171 plates; LOWER CRETACEOUS (1911), with 622 p. and 97 plates; UPPER CRETACEOUS (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1916), with 1022 p. and 90 plates; EOCENE (1901), with 331 p. and 64 plates; MIOCENE (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1904), with 670 p. and 135 plates; and PLIOCENE AND PLEISTOCENE (1906), with 292 p. and 75 plates. The authors that made contributions to these volumes reads like a list of early 20th century "who's who" of the country's most notable geologists and paleontologists. ***CONDITION: These volumes are in VERY GOOD+ TO FINE condition, uniformly bound in the original ribbed green cloth, with gilt lettering on the front covers and backstrips. The covers are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. All outer joints are solid, as are most inner hinges; the bindings are firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. Most volumes are NOT ex-library, but have former owner's signatures on the front endpapers. Four volumes are signed by Marshall Kay (1904-1975), the celebrated Columbia University geologist. Save for one volume, no external ownership markings. This is a very handsome set of highly informative, profusely illustrated volumes. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
