Horn on a tipped-in limitation page from "The Civil War Book Club." The Battle of Nashville, fought on December 1516, 1864, was the final large-scale engagement in the Western Theater of the Civil War. Union forces under Major General George H. Thomas decisively defeated the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by General John Bell Hood. Following the failed Confederate assault at Franklin, Hood advanced toward Nashville in hopes of disrupting Union control in Tennessee. However, Thomas launched a well-planned counteroffensive, overwhelming the entrenched Confederate positions over two days. The Confederate army suffered heavy casualties and was effectively destroyed as a fighting force, ending major Confederate operations in the West. Signed.
