Gand-Courtrai, Uitgeverij Snoeck, [2012]. 223 pp. Col. ills. Softcover. 8vo. Catalogue of the exhibition presented at the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Belfort, from June 23 to September 24, 2012. - Text in French. - - Bartholdi (1834-1904) set off from Marseille on the Osiris, on a long journey from November 1, 1855, to mid-June 1856, to Egypt and Yemen. This group trip, notably with Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), was itinerant. He arrived in Alexandria, stopped in Cairo, and sailed up the dahabieh to the sources of the Nile as far as Aswan. During these study stops, the artist encountered many picturesque and colorful characters. The exhibition, through 100 drawings, Bartholdi's first calotypes (around twenty), unpublished archival documents, and rare and precious books that Bartholdi consulted to prepare for his voyage, will retrace this singular expedition.
