La prima immagine 'fotografica' della storia, databile al 1826 o 1827, rappresenta la veduta da una finestra della casa familiare di Niépce, i primi daguerrotipi di Daguerre e i primi calotipi di Talbot sono vedute urbane. Nel corso del periodo considerato tale rapporto è andato sviluppandosi e articolandosi grazie alle capacità di interpretazione dei fotografi - pionieri elitari, professionisti, amatori - e anche interagendo con i mutamenti del gusto e dell'immaginario collettivo. Perseguendo una stretta interazione fra testi e immagini, fra ricostruzione storica e lettura critica delle opere, gli autori indagano la storia di questi rapporti. Dunque un libro di riferimento ma anche una guida a saper vedere la fotografia. Le immagini di Niépce, di Daguerre, di Talbot, hanno un enorme valore iconico non soltanto e non tanto perché sono le 'prime fotografie', ma perché riassumono meglio dell'oceano di fotografie che seguirono la specificità rivoluzionaria dell'immagine fotografica. Sono infatti dimostrazione della fedeltà senza precedenti dell'immagine al reale e al tempo stesso della impossibilità di una totale fedeltà perché una parte della realtà è alterata. Le ambiguità - il moltiplicarsi delle ombre portate nell'immagine di Niépce - e le assenze - la folla dei boulevard in quelle di Daguerre e di Talbot - sottraggono all'immagine gradi di fedeltà al reale e al tempo stesso le conferiscono un'aura. Nel momento stesso in cui si riproduce fedelmente la realtà, il fatto che essa sia parziale e che ne sia un istante immobilizzato ne costituisce un tradimento o per meglio dire una trasfigurazione. Lo compresero - chi consapevolmente chi inconsapevolmente - i primi fotografi, che erano perlopiù pittori-fotografi. E giustamente la fotografia deve essere considerata un'arte perché l'essenza dell'arte è trasfigurazione, sublimazione, assolutizzazione della realtà. Ciò che del resto fa della fotografia uno straordinario alimento dell'immaginario collettivo è il fatto che essa non soltanto riproduca la realtà delle forme, ma che essa produca una forma di realtà altra.
