A very scarce first edition of "Under the Dog-Star. A Tale of the Boarders". Written by Wilhelmina Martha James (1845-1932), under her pseudonym "Austin Clare". James published many works within her lifetime including a lot of children"s fiction and many religious tracts for the SPCK. Other works by James include "A Child of the Menhir" and "The Carved Cartoon". James" adult fiction includes "The Tideway" (1903), abd Randall of Randalholme: A Tynedale Tragedy" (1904). Including a two page list of author"s publications and four pages of publisher"s advertisements to the rear. Beautifully illustrated by Sidney Paget. In the original publisher"s decorative cloth binding, with gilt title to the spine. Some light marking to the boards and edgewear to the extremities. Light rubbing, particularly to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges are starting slightly but still firm. Age-toning to pastedowns and endpapers. Ink inscription to front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good. book.
