Each page printed within ruled borders and floral corners. First edition. The author of this poem satirizing the authors and editors of the ante-bellum… American literary scene was Augustine Joseph Hickey Duganne (1823-1884). A different version of the work was included in his Poetical Works (Philadelphia, 1855). During the American Civil War he helped to raise the 176th New York Volunteers and was a prisoner of the Confederate States in 1863 and 1864. In addition to work as a journalist and a poet, he wrote several of Beadle's Dime Novels. In Very Good+ Condition: ends of spine lightly rubbed; light foxing throughout; otherwise clean and tight.

A collection of poetry. In fair condition only, front board loosened but still attached, inscription page partially detached and title, dedication and contents pages complete detached and laid in. A.J. H. Duganne (1823-1884) was an American poet, playwright, novelist and Civil War diarist. He was instrumental in the founding of the "Know Nothing Party" , was a colonel in the 17th New York Vols in the Civil War during which time he was captures and spend time an a Confederate prison camp. (NOTE: NOT RETURNABLE FOR CONDITION).

The events are poetically written in verse, hence, the term, "Ballads of War" BACK STORY for interested buyers: A summary of the historic events in prose from the Library of Congress: "The Civil War in America April 1862 "November 1862 In spring 1862, the Union Army of the Potomac took the offensive on the Virginia Peninsula, where its ultimate target was Richmond, the Confederate capital. Northern morale was high. Recent Union victories in the West prompted expectations of a similar outcome in the Peninsula Campaign that would lead to a swift and successful end to the war.As the Army of the Potomac pushed forward, it was hampered not only by Confederate forces but also inclement weather, inferior roads, geographical surprises not indicated on the army's unsatisfactory maps, and overcautious leadership. It was further hampered by Stonewall Jackson's spring Shenandoah Valley Campaign and, after June 1, by the skill of the new commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee. After the failure of the Peninsula Campaign, the Union suffered additional disappointing setbacks.
