Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical and legal complexities surrounding the legitimacy of the Pope's temporal power in Rome. The author argues that the concept of papal sovereignty is grounded in the necessity for the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church to possess political indepen…dence. By examining the historical events leading to the establishment of the Papal States, the book challenges the notion that the Pope's sovereignty was an illegitimate usurpation of power. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the various titles upon which the Pope's temporal authority was based, including the consent of the people, donations from rulers, diplomatic treaties, and the merits of the popes themselves. Through a rigorous examination of the legal and historical evidence, the book sheds light on the enduring significance of the question of papal sovereignty, which remains a topic of debate in the modern era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
