En febrero de 2011 el poeta Arthur Binard y el fotógrafo Tadashi Okakura visitaron el Museo Conmemorativ…o de la Paz en Hiroshima para retratar algunos de los más de 200 objetos que alberga este espacio, marcados por la bomba de uranio que cayó sobre esta ciudad japonesa el 6 de agosto de 1945, acabando con la vida de unas 140. 000 personas. Así surgió ?La espera?, que reúne 14 relatos cortos de esos restos de la barbarie atómica: un reloj, unos guantes de trabajo, una fiambrera quemada, un vestido, unas gafas destartaladas, un diario. . . El autor recrea la vida de estas pertenencias y de sus propietarios -algunos de ellos niñas y niños- antes de la catastrófica explosión. Todos estos artefactos dialogan en primera persona con las lectoras y los lectores sobre el sinsentido de la violencia, expresando el deseo inalcanzable de retomar las costumbres y rutinas interrumpidas por un fulgor incandescente y mortal: el ?pika-don?, que en japonés significa ?bomba atómica? y, de forma literal, ?gran luz?
