Practical Illustrations of Typhus Fever of the Common Continued Fever and of Inflammatory Diseases, &c. &c. New York: Evert Duyckinck, George Long, Collins & Co., 1824. This is an early American reprint of the London Edition (originally published… in 1819), 8vo, bound in full calf with leather title label on spine, 432 pp., light foxing throughout, front joint worn with small splits, bottom of spine chipped, spine and boards rubbed, three preface and dedication leaves almost detached, rear blank end page has about half of it torn and missing, a worn copy with an interesting provenance. The second front blank end page has faint penciled ownership inscription reading "E. H. Rockwood / March 8, 1832 / West Springfield." Ebenezer Hazard Rockwood (1810-1888) was a physician who graduated from Yale in 1832, the same year as the date of the inscription. Ebenezer Hazard Rockwood was born in Boston, Mass. on August 1, 1810; his mother was a relative of Ebenezer Hazard, Esq, the first Postmaster General of the United States. Shortly after his graduation he settled in West Springfield Mass., whence he removed soon to Enfield,* Mass., where he practiced medicine until 1875. When his health failed, he moved to Buffalo, N.Y., to live with family. * Enfield is one of the four "lost" towns flooded for the construction of the Quabbin Reservoir in the 1930s. The other "lost" towns are Greenwich, Dana, and Prescott. Dr. Rockwood is buried in the Quabbin Park Cemetery, built as part of the Quabbin Reservoir project. Over 7,600 graves were relocated there from local cemeteries that are now under water.

A SCARCE EARLY STUDY OF TYPHOID AND ITS TREATMENTS. The work also contains his study of brain fever from drunkenness, a pioneering article on withdrawal and substance abuse that remained highly important for decades and was acclaimed by doctors such as Rush, Trotter and Huss. Armstrong's treatises on fevers were highly regarded in both England and United States. In fact, he was held of such high esteem in and was so widely read in the U.S. that American journals frequently referred to him as "the modern Sydenham".
