Nella prima parte del volume si discutono aspetti di fonetica, morfosintassi e semantica (anche in relazione a nessi fissi e modi di dire) e dati riguardanti il funzionamento dei prestiti ebraici, romanzi e germanici; nella seconda si offre un panorama tendenzialmente esaustivo del lessico differenziale delle parlate e si evidenzia la sua natura di supplenza per aspetti rituali, di vita quotidiana o di identificazione nel gruppo non garantiti dal patrimonio lessicale dei dialetti romanzi comuni. La descrizione onomasiologica del lessico è fondata sul "Begriffssystem als Grundlage für die Lexikologie" stabilito nel 1963 da Rudolf Hallig e Walther von Wartburg, opportunamente integrato in più punti.
