Books on medieval castles are legion but there have been remarkably few on the associated subject in medieval houses. This book adopts a radically new approach to the development of houses between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries from Norman to Tudor times emphasising how their design evolved in response to political and social influences. More than a thousand medieval houses have survived in England and Wales and a list of those that are open to the public is included in the book. Ref YYY 4.

Illustrated throughout, including folding plans of the buildings at end of text. Large heavy book may acquire increased shipping. Dartington Hall in Dartington, near Totnes, Devon, England, is an historic house and country estate of 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) dating from medieval times. The group of late 14th century buildings are Grade I listed; described in Pevsner's Buildings of England as "one of the most spectacular surviving domestic buildings of late Medieval England", along with Haddon Hall and Wingfield Manor. The medieval buildings are grouped around a huge courtyard; the largest built for a private residence before the 16th Century, and the Great Hall itself is the finest of its date in England. The west range of the courtyard is regarded nationally as one of the most notable examples of a range of medieval lodgings. The medieval buildings were restored from 1926 to 1938. AUTHOR: Anthony Emeryâs career as an architectural historian was launched with this wonderful monograph on Dartington Hall analysing the most spectacular medieval mansion in the West of England. Specialist studies on Wingfield Manor, Raglan Castle and Penshurst Place were preparatory to his survey of all the principal (and some of the lesser) medieval residences of England and Wales. It took eighteen years to describe and assess over 750 houses built between 1300 and 1500, published in three volumes as Greater Medieval Houses of England and Wales (CUP 1996-2006).
