Issued without a dust jacket. -- "This study examines the efforts of the restored House of Braganza to stabilise Portugal's Asian empire, known as the Estado da Índia, during the critical decades following the 1640 Restoration. After years of territorial losses, commercial decline and intense competition from the Dutch and English, the Portuguese Crown shifted toward pragmatic policies of conservation and administrative reform rather than reconquest." -- This is a study of the Portuguese Estado da Índia during a critical and neglected period of transition, from the Restoration of Portuguese independence under the House of Braganza in 1640 to the early 1680s. Glenn J. Ames, a specialist in early modern Portuguese and French imperial history, argues that despite the conventional narrative of terminal decline, the Portuguese Asian empire underwent a significant process of reform and stabilisation during these decades. The book traces how the new Braganza dynasty, having overthrown sixty years of Habsburg rule, faced an immediate crisis in its overseas territories - the loss of key possessions in Brazil, Africa and the Indian Ocean to the Dutch, alongside crippling naval and military costs. In Monsoon Asia specifically, the situation appeared dire: fortresses fell, trade routes contracted, and the Carreira da India, the vital sea link between Lisbon and Goa, was severely strained. Ames details the administrative, military, economic and religious reforms initiated from the 1660s onward, showing how a campaign of restructuring gradually stabilised the Estado and enabled it to survive as a viable entity into the 18th century. The study draws on extensive archival research in Lisbon and Goa to reconstruct a story that, as Ames notes, had never previously been told in full. Central to the analysis is the tension between religious priorities and economic pragmatism that characterised Braganza colonial policy. The book is relevant to historians of early modern empire, Indian Ocean trade networks, Luso-Asian relations, and the comparative study of European colonial administration in Asia.

Hardback. Condition: New. Utilizing contemporary accounts of India, China, Siam and the Levant, this study provides rich detail about these exotic lands and explores the priorities that shaped and motivated these bold envoys and chroniclers. Ames and Love offer a fascinating look at the symbiotic nature of cross-cultural interaction between France and the major trading regions of the Indian Ocean basin during the 17th century. During this period of intense French interest in the rich trade and cultures of the region, Louis XIV and his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert in particular were concerned with encouraging French travelers, both clerical and lay, to explore and document these lands. Among the accounts included here are those of François Bernier, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, and François Pyrard.Because these accounts reflect as much about the structures and priorities of France as they do about the cultures they describe, Ames and Love hope their analysis bridges the gap between studies on early modern France and those on the major Asiatic countries of the same period. Their findings challenge the current thinking in the study of early modern France by demonstrating that overseas expansion to Asia was of considerable importance and interest to all segments of French society. Specialists in traditional internal French history will find much in this study of European expansion to complement and supplement their research.
