In the Middl e Ages the Bishops of Durham built a riverside palace which still gives its name to parts of the area. Many of the dramatic conflicts in Church and State during Tudor and Stuart times took place within its walls, as the names of such someti me residents as Catherine of Aragon, Thomas Wolsey, Lady Jane Grey and Sir Walte r Raleigh suggest. The name Adelphi was chosen by the Adam brothers to commemo rate their development in the area and although their riverside terrace was demo lished in 1936, much of the periphery of their estate remains, notably the Royal Society of Arts in John Adam Street. The western side of Robert Street where Ro bert Adam himself resided and where in modern times Kingsley Martin strove to ma intain the literary character of the district once associated with Thomas Hardy, J M Barrie, Richard D'Oyly Carte and George Bernard Shaw is now maintained by t he Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting. Within the walls of the RSA James Barry painted his masterpieces and the idea of the Great Exhibition w as conceived. Charles Dickens had once worked in the hated blacking factory at H ungerford Stairs, and wandered in his misery through the Adelphi arches and vaul ts, long commemorated by the Green Room Club's Fagin's Kitchen. He had also lo dged in Buckingham Street where Pepys had once lived and whose name recalls the great George Villiers, Lord High Admiral, as the surviving Watergate and many fi ne 17th century houses remind us. Remnant & Edmonds was a prominent 19th-century British bookbinding partnership, based in London, renowned for their "relievo" binding during the period 1846-1862, using a powerful embossing press to create the deep reliefs on leather, they were considered pioneers in Victorian cloth bindings, including intricate blind-stamped designs. Their discrete stamp in adhered to the foot of the rear pastedown. This volume is from the collection of Ian Angus, former librarian at King's College, London, and deputy librarian at University College, London, ownership pencilled to FEP, below a previous owner's penned name. General shelf and handling wear, including rubbing, fading and wear to boards, board edges and bumped corners, and tanning to spine. Pageblock head is gilded, tanning and foxing to face and foot, this leading into initial pages, the final few pages, to page edges and occasionally to the content. Light watermark noted to leading edge of the pageblock, this does not affect the text within, or distract from the exquisite decorations and borders surrounding this; very much on the edge of the leaf. Minor foxing to the main body of the content. Within, the leaves are firmly bound, and the illustrations and coloured embellisments are in beautiful condition; several have 'gilt' detail present, all colours vibrant and true. Paper repair to an early leaf, front endleaf with short tears. Some light foxing and browning, plates are a little offset. A good copy. A wonderful example of fine colour printing. This volume has been profusely illustrated and contains four chromolithographs by the versatile architect and designer Owen Jones, who was "one of the most influential design theorists of the 19th century".
