Title-page within an elaborate woodcut ornamental border; woodcut printer's device on the final verso. An early sixteenth-century Venetian edition of Appian's Roman history in the Italian vernacular, issued by the important printer and bookseller Niccolò Zoppino. The edition follows the Giunta textual tradition and is described by Sotheby's as a straight reprint of the 1519 Giunta edition. References: EDIT16 2201; USTC 810083. Sotheby's, Bibliotheca Brookeriana, lot 132, gives the collation AA-ZZ8 &&8 = 192 leaves for this edition. Later binding, probably nineteenth century: brown half calf over marbled paper boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Condition: text complete and fully legible. Scattered spotting and foxing, with some light to moderate dampstaining, principally marginal and most noticeable toward the lower margins; the staining does not affect the readability of the text. No active mold and no odor. Binding rubbed with expected age wear. Early ownership inscriptions and a small woodcut image pasted to the front endpaper. Overall a sound and attractive copy of this uncommon Venetian Appian. A desirable early Italian Appian from the press of Niccolò Zoppino, suitable for a collection of Renaissance printing, classical historiography, or early vernacular editions.
