Nel solco di tale prospettiva lo studio focalizza l'attenzione sulle informazioni e i dati forniti dalle inchieste ministeriali condotte per individuare le caratteristiche, la circolazione e la distribuzione dei libri di testo nelle scuole elementari italiane durante gli anni della Destra storica. Le relazioni prodotte alla fine degli anni Sessanta dell'Ottocento dagli organi periferici deputati alla gestione amministrativa della scuola - i consigli scolastici provinciali- e quelle degli ispettori scolastici locali redatte alla metà degli anni Settanta dello stesso secolo, costituiscono un eccezionale materiale documentario, del tutto inedito, qui riprodotto integralmente, che aiuta a costruire non solo una più attenta geografia del libro per la scuola elementare italiana e del mercato editoriale, ma anche a comprendere le caratteristiche e la cultura pedagogica dei diversi organi e funzionari che svolsero il lavoro di valutazione della manualistica in uso nelle diverse discipline. Lo studio intende, così, arricchire le indispensabili premesse, tanto sotto il profilo dell'affinamento delle metodologie e degli strumenti della ricerca, quanto dal punto di vista del reperimento e della valorizzazione delle fonti archivistiche, per un lavoro, quello sulla manualistica scolastica, che continua ad essere in larga misura da esplorare.
