Udoff, Alan, 1943-, ed. Kafka's contextuality. Staten Island, NY] : [Baltimore]: Gordian Press ; Baltimore Hebrew College, 1986, stated First Printing, xliii, 393pp., good dust-jacket with light wear at top edge, very good black cloth. Kafka's fragmentary creations have suffered their own critical fragmentation as successive readings have sought to privilege one approach or perspective above all others. In an effort to restore an interpretive balance, the present volume has assembled previously unpublished essays of Kafka scholars which represent the broad spectrum of contemporary criticism and, when taken as a whole, re-present Kafka's oeuvre within its essential contexts. -- CONTENTS: Introduction: Abyssus Abyssum Invocat Alan Udoff - KAFKA IN THE CONTEXT OF LITERARY THEORY: Kafka-Critioism: A Typological Perspective in the Centenary Year James Rolleston -- The Marxian Reception of Kafka: Limits and Horizons Kenneth Hughes -- KAFKA IN THE CONTEXT OF WORLD LITERATURE: Franz Kafka's Grillparzer-Reoeption Richard Thieberger -- Kafka in the Context of Modern Literature Peter Heller -- Kafka as Holocaust Prophet: A Dissenting View Lawrence L. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Here, for the first time, faithfully translated in their entirety, are the principal texts for which Franz Rosenzweig initiated the project that would become The Star of Redemption.Included in the volume are Rosenzweig's essay, 'The New Thinking;' four important reviews of The Star of Redemption, and his 1917 letter to Rudolf Ehrenberg, the 'germcell' of The Star.Barbara E. Galli 's own essay touches on the basic concepts of Rosenzweig's work, while pointing to and going beyond his scholarship. Alan Udoff's provocative closing essay situates Rosenzweig's thought in the context of modem and postmodern philosophical concerns and suggests a new direction in assessing the philosopher's theological accomplishment. This volume is a perfect guide for students of the great philosopher and for a broader general audienceseeking an introduction to Rosenzwieg's ideas.

They treat topics such as the place of moral philosophy in relation to his work as a whole, his relationship to contemporary French thought, and the backgrounds of classical Judaic tradition and world literature. The centerpiece of this tableau is Jankélévitch's book Le Pardon (Forgiveness).Chief among the distinguishing characteristics is its rigorous defense of what might be termed a forgiveness free of the entanglements that taint the common understanding of forgiveness-what Jankélévitch refers to as pseudo-forgiveness. The advocacy of forgiveness in the name of political or social expediency, as well as the psychological benefit for the victim, are similarly repudiated. In their place, Jankélévitch substitutes a radical forgiveness that is "initial, sudden, spontaneous"-not able to erase the past, but able to create a new future and, thereby, a new relationship to the past. He does not permit even this future, however, to serve as forgiveness's justification. For him, beyond all justifications, beyond justice itself, forgiveness is a gift akin to love.
