Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A one-act play about the South African Border Wars Somewhere on the Border was written by Anthony Akerman while in exile more than two decades ago. The play was intercepted in the post and banned as a publication by the apartheid censors because the language was considered 'offensive' and th…e portrayal of the South African Armed Forces 'prejudicial to the safety of the state'. This publication of a one-act version of the play brings the South African Border War back into public discourse and pierces through the armour of silence, secrecy and shame that still surrounds it. The script is complemented by an author's preface and an afterword by historian Gary Baines, as well as photographs of its 2011 production. Somewhere on the Border was written in exile and was intercepted in the post and banned by the apartheid censors. This one-act version of the play brings the South African Border War back into public discourse and pierces through the armour of silence, secrecy and shame that still surrounds it. Contact seller5-star sellerEarly nineteenth century American signed binding. VOLUME III ONLY of a five volume set. i-viii, 1-350 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12cm. Mid-nineteenth century half leather binding; spine leather darkened but decorated with five raised bands delineating six compartments; spine's dark brown title label and green volume# label…retain bright gilt lettering; shallow wear/scuffing at spine ends; marbled paper over boards with scuffed leather corners. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers; large mid-20th century geometric personal bookplate of Little Rock, Arkansas collector Warren Baldwin on front pastedown with early 19th century small circular purple ticket "Bound by Akerman, Providence." discreetly affixed at top left (likely Providence, Rhode Island bookbinder and bookseller Charles Akerman, 1812-1879; ticket's style and type is very much in the style of early 1800s British binders; binding itself reflects work typically seen in Edinburgh and London shops rather then contemporary American efforts so perhaps there is some possibility that the Akerman ticket should be in his role as a bookseller than bookbinder; Brown University's archival collections indicates that Akerman took on an apprentice in 1854 so obviously he was already well established but clearly was too young to be binding books in 1822 when this specific volume was published). Warren Baldwin ink stamp dated "190-" at top of page 1; a few pencil markings amongst text with some foxing and scattered small stains. Binding is firm.
