This review of the archaelogical remains from Pleistocene China was begun in 1966 as a research paper for Karl Butzer at the University of Wisconsin. Subsequently, a review of major sites and faunal remains was undertaken for a seminar with Hansjiirgen Muller-Beck, a visiting professor at Wisconsin. Thereafter, I delved into the modern Chinese literature with the guidence of Paul Thompson of the East Asian Studies group on campus, with the ultimate goal of producing a dissertation, under the direction of Chester S. Chard. With the cessation of publication of Chinese scientific journals about 1966, there was a "natural" ending point to my dissertation researches. Publication resumed in 1972 and 1973 in areas pertinent to Pleistocene studies and during the ensuing seven years important materials were reported and newly discovered in China. Revisions and additions leading to this present work were begun during my sabattical in 1977, mostly in Tubingen but also in Brno. Final incorporation of new materials was acannplished at the University of Alaska. I am grateful to my Chinese colleages for additional information and several references not readily available to me in Fairbanks, most especially to Chia Lan-po, P'ei Wen-Chung, An Chih-min and Kai P'ei.
