The bulk of the work is a long poem based on Knaresborough in The English Civil War. Sections of the main poem are linked to different areas of Yorkshire: this is explained on the contents page. Richard Abbay was an interesting character: apart from this forage into poetry, he also published a work on Coffee Leaf Disease; was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and London Mathematical Society; ordained as a Canon as well as holding a patent on postcard design.
