Corners and spine bumped. Private library label to front pastedown (Thirkleby Park) with ownership signature of Sir Ralph Gallwey dated 1888, to… second blank (Sir Ralph lived at Thirkleby Park). Light periodic scattered spotting. Map correctly folded and undamaged, showing the route of Prince Rupert's march. Some pages uncut (later verses). Binding tight. The bulk of the work is a long poem based on Knaresborough in The English Civil War. Sections of the main poem are linked to different areas of Yorkshire: this is explained on the contents page. Castle poem pp1-311; White Mare poem pp315-337, but with some pages uncut. Richard Abbay was an interesting character: apart from this forage into poetry, he also published a work on Coffee Leaf Disease; was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and London Mathematical Society; ordained as a Canon as well as holding a patent on postcard design.
