Product Description: Now in its final resting place at the bottom of the Potomac River in Maryland, the U-Boat U-1105 is unique among German World War II submarines. Technologically innovative, it was the only U-Boat to conduct a wartime patrol while equipped with the snorkel, GHG Balkon passive sonar and a rubberized coating known as Alberich designed to reduce its acoustic signature and hide from Allied sonar. After the end of World War II, it was the subject of intense testing and evaluation by the Allies, before finally being sunk to the bottom of the Potomac River. This highly illustrated book uses many new and previously unpublished images to tell the full story of this remarkable U-Boat, evaluating the effectiveness of its late war technologies, document its extensive postwar testing and detail all the features still present on the wreck site today.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Bloody Streets: Armor, Artillery and Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin is a comprehensive reference work on armoured warfare during the Battle of Berlin. The Red Army launched their final offensive in Europe with the highest concentration of tanks and self-propelled artillery ever assem…bled up to that time. Yet, they lost more armour in each day of fighting than during any other battle the Allies fought during World War II. Most of the armour losses inside Berlin were caused by a new German weapon known as the Panzerfaust. The hand-held rocket was employed for the first time in large numbers and revolutionized anti-tank warfare. The new weapon allowed anyone with rudimentary training, no matter their age, to easily destroy the largest armoured vehicle on the battlefield. To ensure the survivability of their tanks and self-propelled artillery, the Red Army evolved the Assault Group concept and issued orders to protect their armour with new anti-Panzerfaust screens. The Soviets fundamentally altered the structure of their tank armies and related offensive doctrine in the aftermath of the Battle of Berlin. Many of the lessons learned documented by the Red Army at that time are still relevant to armoured tactics in complex terrain today. This book presents for the first time in English over a hundred pages of Soviet lessons learned on the employment of tanks, self-propelled artillery, artillery pieces, and the evolution of Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin. German anti-tank tactics are detailed through the observations of the Red Army combat units that fought in the battle. This new volume is designed as an armour reference for the Battle of Berlin. Hundreds of wartime black and white photographs of Soviet and German armour and artillery illustrate this book in a large format. Each photograph includes a comprehensive description with technical details and historical context. The photographs are supplemented by over a hundred colour profiles, 2D and 3D images of German and Soviet armour, to include Allied Lend Lease vehicles, artillery, and support vehicles. In addition, hundreds of colour photos of surviving examples of the armour that fought in Berlin from both sides are included to provide modelers with superb reference material, to include all three T-34/85 Factory variants. Of particular interest are the graphics that depict the different Assault Group formations that formed across the First Belorussian and First Ukrainian Fronts in order to protect armoured units and overcome determined German resistance. Researchers, armour enthusiasts, and modelers will find rich new material about the Battle of Berlin from the unique perspective of armoured warfare. This is the first of several new volumes about various aspects of the Battle of Berlin, which build upon decades of research for the original Bloody Streets. AUTHOR: Aaron Stephan Hamilton is an academically trained historian, avocational maritime archaeologist, technologist, researcher and published author. He has studied adversarial military operations and technological innovations across a wide-spectrum of fields gained through a quarter-century of military and national security service. Hamilton's primary historical interest is the final year of combat operations during World War II, with a focus on the evolution of military tactics and technology. He also researches the exploitation of German and Japanese wartime innovations by the Allies, and their impact in the postwar world. Bloody Streets: The Soviet Assault on Berlin first published in 2008 remains the most detailed tactical study of the Battle of Berlin published to-date. 39pp colour illustrations, 143 colour photos, 273 b/w photos, 33 b/w illustrations, 5 b/w maps, 11 tables Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Nazi Germany's fall is regularly depicted through the dual images of Adolf Hitler directing the final battle for Berlin from his claustrophobic Fuehrerbunker, and the subsequent Soviet victory immortalized by the flying of the 'Hammer and Sickle' over the burnt-out Reichstag. This popular vi…ew, that Germany's last battle of World War II was a deliberate, yet fatalistic, defense of Berlin planned and conducted by Hitler, is largely a historically inaccurate depiction that fits a popularized characterization of the Third Reich's end. Germany's final battle began when Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici took command of Heeresgruppe Weichsel (Army Group Vistula) on 20 March 1945, not when the massive Soviet offensive intended to capture Berlin was launched on 16 April. Heinrici, not Hitler, decided that there was only one strategic course left for Germany-hold the Soviets back along the Oder Front long enough to entice the Western Allies across the Elbe River. Heinrici knew two things: the war was lost and what remained of Germany was destined for postwar Soviet occupation. His intent was that a protracted defense along the Oder Front would force General Eisenhower to order the Western Allies into the postwar Soviet Zone of Occupation outlined in the Top Secret Allied Plan known as 'Eclipse', thereby sparing millions of Germans in the east the dismal fate of Soviet vengeance everyone knew was at hand. Berlin, Heinrici ordered, would not be defended. The capital of Germany would not become another 'Stalingrad' as Heinrici told his subordinates. A decision by OKW on 23 April to defend Berlin in a final decisive battle forced Heinrici into direct conflict with his superiors over the conduct of operations along the Oder Front -a conflict that undermined his capability to defend against the Soviets and ultimately cost Heinrici his command. In a companion volume to his successful and highly-regarded study of the Soviet assault on the city of Berlin, Bloody Streets, author A. Stephan Hamilton describes the planning and execution of the defense of the Oder Front, reconstructing it day-by-day using previously unpublished personal diaries, postwar interviews, Heeresgruppe Weichsel's war diary and daily command phone logs. Operations of the 3.Panzer Armee, 9.Armee, 12.Armee, and 21.Armee are covered in detail, with their unit movements depicted on over 60 wartime operational maps. The narrative is supported by an extensive selection of appendices, including translations of postwar narratives relating to Heeresgruppe Weichsel penned by senior German officers, biographical notes on notable officers of the Heeresgruppe, and highly detailed orders of battles. In addition to a number of b/w photographs, this study features 64 pages of operational maps reproduced in full color. "Historical accuracy comes from exhaustive research and a deft writer's hand. Hamilton's The Oder Front, 1945 will prove to be the definitive work on the little-understood Nazi defense outside the gates of the German capital.
