Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Cyrus S. Eaton was born on December 27, 1883, in the quiet Nova Scotian village of Pugwash. He often visited Cleveland, Ohio, spending summer vacations from college with his uncle and was employed in 1905 by his first teacher, John D. Rockefeller Sr., as a clerk and troubleshooter for the East Ohio Gas company, one of the Midwest's major utilities in which Rockefeller had an interest. Eaton became a U.S. citizen in 1913 and passed away at age ninety-five on May 9, 1979. An unpredictable financier and industrialist, Cyrus Eaton invested widely, earned millions, lost it all during the Depression, and then regained his fortune after World War II. He earned a reputation as a ""steel-tough man of finance"" and was the target of abuse from those who claimed his manipulations had caused them financial damage. Marcus Gleisser's updated biography of Eaton brings into focus many events in the life of this controversial figure: his strong support of labor; his friendships with John L. Lewis, Fidel Castro, Nikita Khrushchev, and other leaders of the former USSR; and his interest and participation in the American political arena, especially his campaign for peace that culminated in the Nobel Prize-winning Pugwash Conference. The World of Cyrus Eaton addresses the man and the part he played in some of the controversial events and issues of the twentieth century. It includes a new Foreword, Preface, and final chapter. An unpredictable financier and industrialist, Cyrus Eaton, earned millions, lost it all during the Depression, and regained his fortune after World War II. He earned a reputation as a ""steel-tough man of finance"" and was the target of abuse from those who claimed his manipulations had caused them financial damage. This is his story. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Egyptian-born composer Halim El-Dabh has studied with the giants of 20th-century musical composition and conducting, including Leopold Stokowski, Irving Fine, and Leonard Bernstein. In the late 1950s El-Dabh worked with electronic music pioneers Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. He was commissioned by choreographer and modern dance innovator Martha Graham to write the music for ""Clytemnestra"" and ""Lucifer"". Although this biography focuses on his career from his arrival in the US in 1950 to his retirement from the faculty of Kent State University in 1991, his life in Egypt, its influence on him musically, and his creative life after retirement is also covered. In March 2002 El-Dabh presented a concert of his electronic and electro-acoustic works and three concerts of his orchestral chamber music in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina String Orchestra at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the famous Library of Alexandria of antiquity). The accompanying CD features excerpts of this programme. Although this biography of Egyptian-born composer Halim El-Dabh focuses on his career from his arrival in the US in 1950 to his retirement from the faculty of Kent State University in 1991, his life in Egypt, its influence on him musically, and his creative life after retirement are also covered. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. World, Self, Poem collects the best of the essays submitted by poets and scholars from around the US and Canada, and beyond, for presentation at the ""Jubilation of Poets"" festival celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Cleveland State University Poetry Centre in October 1986. In this collection, 18 critics consider the works of a number of important postmodern poets and, using various approaches, confront some of the central problems posed by the poetry of the past 25 years. John Ashbery, Wendell Berry, Edward Dorn, Robert Duncan, Geoffrey Hill, Ted Hughes, Louise Gluck, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Gary Snyder, Gerald Stern and William Stafford are among the poets who receive detailed attention in these essays. The questions addressed include political involvement and non-involvement, the theme of nuclear annihilation, the poet's use and misuse of history, poetry workshops in Central America, the ""I"" in contemporary poetry; the pastoral vein in contemporary poetry; the nature and implications of concrete and ""found"" poetry, analogies of poetry and music. Hardback. The Kent State University Press, Kent State University Press. For thousands of years humans have grappled with the idea of Nature. This enduring question has left its poignant mark in a multiplicity of images, stories, works of art, and philosophical and religious systems. In this text, Michael Tobias seeks to unravel the aesthetic, psychological and philosophical impact that the Earth has had on humanity. It is an overview of the new field of ecological aesthetics. Comprised of 10 autobiographical essays, the book is illustrated with art and images brought together in an ecological context. The author examines the mystical links between Vivaldi, Giorgione and Dosso Dossi and draws parallels between the Age of Exploration and the rise of the ""interior landscape"" in the works of van Eyck and Vermeer. Tobias examines the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean, the ascetics of Sinai and Tibet, and the Pure Land Buddhists. He introduces the reader to the Jains of India, whose life-style is one of the most ecologically balanced in all of human history. In profiling various artists of 19th-century Europe and America, Tobias discovers incisive continuities among such luminaries as British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, Austrian impressionist Emilie Mediz-Pelikan, and American intimist painters Ralph Blakelock and George Inness. Tobias finds a common, transcendent instinct that affirms rebirth over destruction in the lives of explorer Francis Kingdon Ward, storyteller Hugh Lofting, philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis, and film character King Kong. He concludes his lyrical investigations in the Antarctic, where he ponders the future of humanity and its role as caretaker of the Earth. Ultimately, the survival of humankind and of all other species hinges upon our willingness to uphold and celebrate the truth, beauty and very sanctity of Nature. Hardback. …
