Hardback. Condition: New. Asian Case Studies on Translating Christianity brings historical expressions of Asian Christianity into contemporary theological conversation. The book offers case studies of Jingjiao Christianity in Tang China, the Jesuit mission in Ming China, indigenous theology in colonial Korea, and contemporary Asian-American theology. The case studies especially examine how the names and understandings of the Trinity have been changed in the processes of borrowing, erasing, and elevating the meanings of Eastern local concepts to translate the message of Christianity. Not only are these diverse expressions of Christianity unique and valuable in and of themselves, but they testify that diverse understandings are a God-given phenomenon. Heejun Yang draws on contemporary theological hermeneutics to argue that it is the self-communicative nature of God that helps articulate the diverse understandings of God in these cases. Yang posits the Triune God as both the starting and ending points of the Christian hermeneutic process and claims that this understanding can be a way for the church to embrace different Christian communities while moving forward in their own unique complexities.…

Add to basketCouverture rigide. Medhurst et J. Boone (A few plain Questions adressed to those Missionaries, who in their preaching or writing, teach the Chinese to workship Shang-ti), parus l'année précédente. Cordier signale un compte-rendu de cet ouvrage par S.W. Williams, paru dans le Chinese Repository (vol. xviii, pp. 604 et suivantes). Cartonnage de l'époque, avec l'inscription dorée sur le premier plat : "On the Sacred Phraseology and Religion of the Chinese". | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition (cf. Cordier, Sinica, 1282).Contemporary flexible grey cloth, smooth unlettered spine slightly faded, blind-ruled borders to the boards, title lettered in gilt at the centre of both boards, a label bearing a handwritten inscription pasted to the upper left-hand corner of the front board, yellow paper pastedowns and endpapers, sprinkled edges.George Thomas Staunton (17811859), an English diplomat and Orientalist, accompanied his father on a mission to China as early as 1792 and thus acquired a sound knowledge of the language at a very young age. In 1810, he published the Ta Tsing leu lee under the title Fundamental Laws of China. The controversy he raises over the Chinese rendering of the word "God" explicitly refers to works by W. H. Medhurst and J. Boone (A few plain Questions adressed to those Missionaries, who in their preaching or writing, teach the Chinese to workship Shang-ti), published the previous year.Cordier records a review of this work by S. W. Williams, published in the Chinese Repository (vol. XVIII, pp. 604 ff.).Contemporary binding, with the following title lettered in gilt on the front board: "On the Sacred Phraseology and Religion of the Chinese". * in-8 ; 2 ff.n.ch., 67 pp.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book addresses the translation of culture in the context of religion. The contributions, which analyse texts in literary, ethnohistorical and/or linguistic terms, show how different cultural traditions and languages are communicated across boundaries. They include studies of the missionary context of the Early Middle Ages and of colonially dominated cultures in Latin America, India, China, Africa and Australia, from the 16th to the early 20th century; and they analyse literary works with respect to how they transmit and translate culture: one a Christian play in the context of Islam, the other one a novel of the Haitian diaspora in the USA; another contribution presents the challenges of how the concept of religion itself is conveyed in contemporary scholarly contexts. By using different methodological tools, the authors show the manifold and innovative ways in which this field of the translation of culture can be approached. With contributions byGwilym Colenso, Fiona Darroch, Sabine Dedenbach-Salazar Sáenz, Pär Eliasson, Sarah Irving, Alison Jasper, David Moore, Brian Murdoch, Richard H. Roberts, Frauke Sachse, Roxana Sarion.…
