Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Presentation copy of the First Edition, inscribed by Pitcher to Donald Davidson. xi, 238 pp. Original cloth. Lower corner of p. i-xi creased, else Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket (unclipped). Inscribed on flyleaf: 'For Don/with warm regards-/George.' 'There are many kinds of intentionalist theory of perception. Some of the most influential intentional theories are Anscombe (1965), Armstrong (1968), Dretske (1969), Pitcher (1970) . Armstrong and Pitcher argued that perception is a form of belief. (More precisely, they argued that it is the acquisition of a belief, since this is a conscious event, as perceiving is; rather than a state or condition, as belief is.) Belief is an intentional state in the sense that it represents the world to be a certain way, and the way it represents the world to be is said to be its intentional content. Perception, it was argued, is similarly a representation of the world, and the way it represents the world to be is likewise its intentional content. The fact that someone can have a perceptual experience that a is F without there being any thing which is F was taken as a reason for saying that perception is just a form of belief-acquisition' (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
