Octavo, original white cloth blocked in black with a gothic scene reproduced from the cover design of the original. 182 pp. Supernatural fiction writer Ron Weighell's copy, inscribed and signed by him on the ha…lf title leaf incorporating the printed title: "This copy of STUDIES OF DEATH is from the library of Ron & Fran Weighell". Limited to 300 numbered copies, of which this is number 231 (although actually only 296 were issued due to a printer's error). A fine copy without dust wrapper as issued. Supernatural tales, including "The True Story of a Vampire". This edition bears a new Introduction by David Tibet and reproduces a photographs of Count Stenbock, his tombstone and his manor house, Withdeane House, near Brighton. In addition to the seven tales in the original edition there are three additional stories collected here, one of which, "The Other Side", is a previously uncollected werewolf story. Ron Weighell (19502020) was a British writer of fiction in the supernatural, fantasy and horror genre. Weighell's fiction is characterized by his knowledge of incunabula, architecture, art and art symbolism, mysticism, and the occult, and pays homage to his two primary influences, M. R. James and Arthur Machen. Books from his personal library are mostly unknown on the market, and having his copy of STUDIES OF DEATH is a very special occurence indeed.

A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the extremities, the cloth dusty and with a brown mark to the upper board. The contents, with some toning to…the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. A collection of seven stories with an emphasis on the weird and macabre comprising 'Hylas'; 'Narcissus'; 'The Death of a Vocation'; 'Viol d'Amor'; 'The Egg of the Albatross'; 'The True Story of a Vampire'; 'The Worm of Luck'. One of only four books published during Count Stanislaus Eric Stenbock's short but influential lifetime, this being his only collection of short fiction. William Butler Yeats in his anthology 'The Oxford Book of Modern Verse 1892-1935', (OUP, 1936) describes the author, who died aged 36 as a result of alcoholism and opium addiction, "a scholar, connoisseur, drunkard, poet, pervert, most charming of men".
