Questo catalogo prosegue il lavoro di revisione e ampliamento della documentazione della collezione del Conservatorio "Luigi Cherubini" di Firenze, avviato nel 2001 con la pubblicazione del volume dedicato agli strumenti provenienti dalle raccolte dei Medici e dei Lorena (La musica e i suoi strumenti 2001). A questo ha fatto seguito, nel 2009, quello relativo agli strumenti della famiglia del violino e degli archetti (Gli strumenti ad arco 2009): il catalogo che qui si presenta ne č la continuazione. Questo volume comprende pertanto le schede degli strumenti a corde esclusi dai due cataloghi precedenti: cordofoni a manico europei a corde pizzicate e a corde sfregate, salteri e cetre europei, strumenti a tastiera. Nell'ambito di ognuna delle suddette sezioni, gli strumenti sono ordinati per tipologia (mandolini e mandole, chitarre, salteri, cetre ecc.) e in ordine cronologico. L'origine della raccolta di strumenti extraeuropei del Conservatorio di Firenze - quasi tutti provenienti dalla collezione della contessa Edith Bronson Rucellai che ne fece dono all'Istituto fiorentino nel 1939 - ha indotto a mantenere nel catalogo l'unitą di questa parte della collezione alla quale č stata dunque dedicata una sezione specifica e indipendente all'interno della quale gli esemplari sono stati invece ordinati non per tipologia ma sulla base della provenienza geografica.
