Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, University of Vienna (Anglistik), course: Proseminar Linguistik, language: English, abstract: When it comes to learning a language, there seems to be a certain period in which a child must acquire the basic competences in order to be able to understand and use language. This window of opportunity is also called critical period and has been the subject of much research over the last decades. Especially for future language teachers, the question about the existence of such a critical period for second language acquisition as well arises. This paper examines the actual research on critical period for second language acquisition and sheds light on the on-going academic discussion. The paper proceeds as follows: section 2 provides a short description of the Critical Period Hypothesis and sheds light on biological and neurological aspects of language learning. In section 3 recent findings of research according to critical periods in second language acquisition are presented and discussed. Section 4 contains a list with personal characteristics and strategies having emerged out of different studies. These characteristics might help second language learners to gain more success in their goal to reach the status of native speakers. This of course can also be useful for language teachers who want to support their learners. Section 5 provides a short conclusion.
Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1.3, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: My paper will illustrate the researcher s (Nick Ellis) attempt to uncover the interplay of classroom humor, learners' interaction, and incidental learning and explore how reliable and valid her study is in answering her research question. The second part of this paper discusses the theoretical basis of the study. The third part introduces the research design along with my reflections upon its upside and downside. Lastly, I will conclude with a discussion on the implication of the study and provide areas of further consideration for future studies on this topic. Based on theories of psycholinguistics on how L2 learners could better internalize their target linguistic knowledge, this paper is a critical review of a resent instructed second language acquisition study on the different effect of playful and nonplayful incidental vocabulary learning during classroom instruction. This paper lays out a solid theoretical basis for the issue in focus, including a summary of studies on playful instructions and the role of incidental focus on form. The strengths and weaknesses of the target research are then discussed, from the perspective of its data collection and coding methods, and resluts analysis.
Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - Orthopaedagogy and Special Education, grade: -, Charles Darwin University, language: English, abstract: Recent studies have suggested that the limited research literature that is devoted to second language acquisition disorders for students with special educational needs can be categorized into two clear polarizing views, being firstly; clinical representation of the disorders and secondly classroom interventional strategies and curriculum adaption. Neither camp seeks to acknowledge the importance of the role the other plays. This is an extremely unfortunate situation as the theoretical literature, the most common place educators and parents seek out assistance to help the learner, is a gallimaufry of ideas, for the most part, which do not draw upon clinical research data as it is more often than not presented and worded in a way that makes it inaccessible to those without a deep knowledge of linguistics or medical terminology. Future research in this area would benefit from a more 'user friendly' cross-discipline approach.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel (Anglistik), course: Englische Fachdidaktik, language: English, abstract: Second language acquisition, in particular English, is nowadays more important than ever before. As a consequence, it is of great importance to improve second language education at school. In order to do this, learner factors as for instance age, motivation or aptitude have to be considered more closely. The present research paper considers the question if second language learning can be affected by age, particularly if there is a critical period that can affect the learning success in a negativeway. The common sense that children are the most successful language learners will be examined and compared to contrary opinions. In a last step, the results will be used to drawconclusions for second language instruction.
