"For this second edition the original research has been followed up by new fieldwork, the results of which are presented in an additional chapter… which brings the record up to the end of 1972 and offers further theoretical discussion. 'This book and its companions are highly recommended to all . The high quality of the Xhosa in Town series makes it possibly the best contribution we have about African life in a contemporary urban industrial setting' (American Anthropologist). The author, formerly Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Social and Economic Research at Rhodes University, is Professor of Anthropology at the University of South Africa.".

The final volume in the trilogy 'Xhosa in Town'. 8vo; original salmon-coloured cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustwrapper; pp. xviii + (ii) + 219, incl. index; plates; tables; map. Dustwrapper edgeworn, sunned and scuffed; trace of soiling to fore-edge; sporadic foxing. Good. "The town in question is East London, Cape Provinc…e; the people studied in this volume are second-generation East Londoners, Bantu who were born or bred in town. . The investigation shows how the acceptance of Western patterns started among preceding generations in rural areas, and how the process of 'Westernization' was furthered by definitive settlement in town. In certain situations, however, traditional values and patterns of behaviour assert themselves, and appear to meet the emotional needs arising from uncertainty and insecurity. These themes are illustrated by examining the conditions which caused the first generation to 'get stuck' in town; by isolating distinct cultural types among the second generation; and by analysing family rituals and ceremonies, household and family structure, and the social network of second-generation town-dwellers. An interesting feature revealed by this study is the 'matrifocal' trend emerging in many urban households.".

Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First published as part of the trilogy entitled Xhosa in Town, this book concerns the second generation of urban Africans in the South African seaport of East London. The investigation shows how the acceptance of Western patterns started among preceding generations in rural areas and how t…he process of Westernization was furthered by definitive settlement in town. In certain situations, however, traditional values and patterns of behaviour assert themselves and appear to meet the emotional needs arising from uncertainty and insecurity. These themes are illustrated by examining the conditions that caused the first generation to settle in town, by isolating distinct cultural types among the second generation, and by analysing family rituals and ceremonies, premarital relations and marriage, household and family structure, and the social universe of second-generation town-dwellers. An interesting feature revealed by this study is the matrifocal trend emerging in many urban households. For this second edition the original research has been followed up by new fieldwork, the results of which are presented in an additional chapter which brings the record up to the end of 1972 and offers further theoretical discussion.
