[123] pp. 8-3/4" x 5-1/2" Inscription reads: "To some unnamed friend of the University Women's Union in the famous town by Don and Dee; from Gordon Bottomley 31st December 1933." A VG copy. Wrappers have some soiling, some rubbing/chipping around the edges. Inscription to ffep by Bottomley. (as well some light pencil markings). Some ink annotations to p. 41 presumably from Gordon Bottomley as its signed with a "G". Some light foxing, overall a clean copy. Decorative floral paper wrappers, printed in green and brown, title label to upper wrapper and back strip, printed in green.

Gordon Bottomley (1874 1948) was an English poet, known particularly for his verse dramas. Aged seven, Bottomley contracted a tubercular illness that would affect him for the rest of his life. As a result, he was invalided for long periods of time and was unable to travel widely or live in a town. Bottomley began writing poetry in the 1890s and was influenced by the Romantic poets and even more so by such later figures as Rossetti and Algernon Swinburne. Bottomley included many famous writers, poets and artists as friends. An early environmentalist, Bottomley's writing was always closely grounded in geographical location. Bottomley studied the work of artists and was a dedicated collector. He bought artworks when he could afford to, and his friends also gave him their art in gratitude for his support and friendship. In the 1940s Bottomley and his wife Emily gave their personal art collection of six hundred paintings, prints and drawings to the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle, Cumberland. The bequest included a nationally important collection of works by the Pre-Raphaelites including pictures by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, Arthur Hughes, Ford Madox Brown, Elizabeth Siddal and Simeon Solomon. Sir Edward Howard Marsh KCVO CB CMG (1872 1953) was a British polymath, translator, arts patron and civil servant. He was the sponsor of the Georgian school of poets and a friend to many poets, including Rupert Brooke and Siegfried Sassoon. In his career as a civil servant he worked as private secretary to a succession of the United Kingdom's most powerful ministers, particularly Winston Churchill. This softcover book is in near-fine condition. Signed by Author(s).
