It is followed by a separately paginated section, The Companion to the Altar (68 pages). Then there is a separate title page for the Whole Book of Psalms. This title page is complete and dated 1778. Printed by John Archdeacon, Printer to the University. Unpaginated. Complete, with index. Previous owners name written in ink on the final page of the index, Susanna Trible, Thornburg. The rear endpapers are covered in neat writing as well. Susanna Trible Writing steal not this Book for fear of shame for in it is the owners name. Also, force may indeed the hart invade but kindness only can persuade. My god my everlasting hope I live upon thy truth thy hands have held my children up and strengthened all my youth. And another in the same fashion on the facing page. Also the name Samuel Trible. A quick genealogical search reveals a Trible family in Devonshire at the time of the publication of this book, who later emigrated to the United States. The Susanna Trible on that family tree died in Illinois in the 1840s. Binding is tight. plain brown leather worn at the edges and hinges.…

Edges painted red. Modern front end-pages and fly-leaves clean (originals lacking). Title page of part 1 exhibits old-hand previous ownership signature at top edge; toning and scuffing around edges of leaf; red ink dulled, but legible. Text-blocks normally toned with sparse instances of age-staining or finger-soiling. Modern binding remains tight and intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Robert Barker (died 1643) was a printer to James I of England and son of Christopher Barker, who had been printer to Queen Elizabeth I. He was most notably the printer of the King James Bible, one of the most influential and important books ever printed in the English language. He and co-publisher Martin Lucas published the infamous "Wicked Bible", which contained a typographical error omitting the word "not" from the sentence Thou shalt not commit adultery. After working in the printing business for some time, Barker began working with his father's printing company in 1589 and inherited the printing house on 29 November 1599 upon his father's death. Much of his printing work was of an official nature, including prayer books, scriptures, and law books. Thomas Sternhold (1500 1549) was an English courtier and the principal author of the first English metrical version of the Psalms, originally attached to the Prayer-Book as augmented by John Hopkins. Sternhold and Hopkins's version has had a larger circulation than any work in the language, except the authorised version of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. His first edition undated, but, as being dedicated to Edward VI, not earlier than 1547, contains nineteen psalms (i v, xx, xxv, xxviii, xxix, xxxii, xxxiv, xli, xlix, lxxiii, lxxviii, ciii, cxx, cxxiii, cxxviii).
