Decorative Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None. A very good to near fine copy of Profitable Plants, which was originally published under the title Popular Economic Botany by Lovell Reeve as part of their Popular Natural History series. It is undated but probably circa 1865 and is unusual in retaining the original decorative spine…design from the Popular Natural History series. It is a scarce title and is complete with hand coloured frontispiece and 19 further hand coloured plates. The binding has slight darkening to edges and slight wear to edges including spine joints (slight scuff at rear joint). Spine ends are lightly pulled. The original yellow endpapers are present. Contents are in very good to near fine clean condition. Fitch, F Reeve (illustrator).

Collated complete. A detailed work on the origins of vegetation used for food, clothing, tanning, dyeing, medicine, and perfumery.…With reference to tea plants, coffee plants, sugar cane, the prickly pear, various nuts, cotton plants, hemp, palms, oils from seeds, and much more. Written by Thomas Croxen Archer, a British botanist who was Director of the Industrial Museum of Scotland, also known as the Edinburgh Museum of Science and Art. Dated from the British Library. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Splits to the cloth at the head and tail of the joints. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. The odd ink or pencil annotation. Minor age toning to the extremities with light spotting to the first and last few pages. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page. Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.

Besides the descriptions of coffee, tea, cocoa…, cloves, cinnamon, nuts, palms, the author also describes opium, tobacco, cinchona, senna, etc. Regarding opium, the author states that 51 tons were imported in 1852.
