Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. No other ancient works of the United States have become so widely known or have excited so much interest as those of Ohio. This is due in part to their remarkable character but in a much greater degree to the "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley," by Messrs. Squier and Davis, in which these monuments are described and figured. The constantly recurring question, "Who constructed these works?" has brought before the public a number of widely different theories, though the one which has been most generally accepted is that they originated with a people long since extinct or driven from the country, who had attained a culture status much in advance of that reached by the aborigines inhabiting the country at the time of its discovery by Europeans. The opinion advanced in this paper, in support of which evidence will be presented, is that the ancient works of the State are due to Indians of several different tribes, and that some at least of the typical works, were built by the ancestors of the modern Cherokees. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The problem of the Ohio mounds examines the enduring mystery of the ancient mound structures located across Ohio, seeking to resolve debates over their origins. The book begins by framing the central question that has sparked widespread curiosity-who constructed these remarkable earthworks? Drawing from detailed analysis and comparative research, the author moves beyond past theories attributing the mounds to unknown or extinct races. Instead, the narrative presents compelling archaeological and cultural evidence to support an indigenous origin, arguing that the mounds were the work of Native American tribes, particularly those who were present at the time of early European contact. The book highlights connections between burial customs, artefact types, and social traditions, positioning the mounds as integral to the history and legacy of the region's original inhabitants. Through methodical argument and scientific inquiry, it counters misconceptions and reinforces the significance of these structures as living testaments to Native American ingenuity and continuity. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical evidence and cultural practices that link Native American tribes to the construction of ancient Ohio mounds. The author examines the mounds' architectural similarities to dwellings of contemporary tribes, and the presence of artifacts indicating a sedentary lifestyle, such as hearths, pottery, and tools. The book also analyzes burial customs, such as communal burials and the use of stone graves, which align with practices documented among certain tribes. By tracing the continuity of these cultural markers, the author argues that the mounds were likely built by ancestors of the Cherokee and other tribes, challenging the notion that they were the work of a separate, extinct civilization. This well-researched and engaging study sheds new light on the complex history of Native American mound-building and provides valuable insights into their cultural and architectural traditions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
