Il s'y affirme comme critique d'art et assure le compte-rendu des Salons. Il devient conservateur du château de Versailles jusqu'à sa mort en 1882. Essais sur Musset, Murger, Feuillet, Karr, Houssaye, Mérimée, Gustave Planche, Gautier, Saint-Marc Girardin, Jean Rotrou, Balzac.
