A fine anni settanta Alien Ginsberg è ormai il dio della controcultura americana, intellettuale impegnato e poeta di fama internazionale, consacrato nel 1974 dal National Book Award for Poetry e nel 1978 arrestato per avere guidato la protesta antinucleare in Colorado, vicino alla sua Boulder. Roba da Guerra fredda, ma è attualità pura e paradossale. "Ode plutonia" è la bomba atomica secondo Alien Ginsberg: mescolanza caustica di politica e visionarietà blakeana, segreti militari e trasfigurazione letteraria, anzi sapienziale, radioattività e gnosticismo - non stupisce che Philip Class ne abbia tratto una sinfonia. Ma "Ode plutonia" è anche tanto altro: "Ballata dei veleni" e "Lavori di casa", tra le prime poesie a tema ecologico che siano mai state composte; "Aria del Campidoglio" - la improvvisò con i Clash nel 1981 in un locale di Times Square -, segnata dal senso di delusione per il comunismo, che ormai Ginsberg apparenta al capitalismo, e dal disgusto per la politica, oggi storia, di quegli anni; Punk Rock tuo mio Gran Piagnucolone e l'ammirazione per la marea montante del punk, quei ragazzi arrabbiati che ha imparato a conoscere in Inghilterra e che gli ricordano lo spirito ribelle dei figli dei fiori, la generazione che lui ha incantato; ma anche gli scorci di una metafisica quotidianità newyorkese in Manhattan Primo Maggio di notte e la nota erotica di poesie come Un po' d'amore, che con rime arcaizzanti dicono la malinconia di un pigmalione ormai invecchiato; o la corda intima di Garden State, in cui Ginsberg torna a visitare i luoghi dell'infanzia in New Jersey e ricorda il padre, il padre professore e poeta, il padre morto, il padre nell'Ade.
