It is inseparable from the intellectual biography of Nikolai Berdyaev, one of the most important Russian philosophers and religious thinkers of the twentieth century. Born in 1874 into an aristocratic family, Berdyaev was educated in Kiev, became involved in Marxist circles in his youth, and was soon drawn into the revolutionary ferment of late Imperial Russia. Over time he broke decisively with orthodox Marxism, developing a deeply original Christian existential philosophy centred on freedom, personality, creativity, and the spiritual destiny of humanity. After the Bolshevik Revolution, Berdyaev openly opposed the ideological foundations of the new regime. In 1922 he was arrested by the Soviet authorities and expelled from Russia on the so-called "Philosophers' Ship," a forced deportation of leading intellectuals whose ideas were deemed incompatible with the emerging totalitarian state. Settling in exile, first in Berlin and later in Paris, he became one of the central figures of Russian émigré thought, founding journals, lecturing widely, and producing a remarkable body of work that examined the spiritual causes of revolution, the crisis of modern civilisation, and the dangers of ideological absolutism. Within this intellectual framework, the present book traces the formation of the Russian intelligentsia, the rise of socialism and nihilism, the transformation of classical Marxism within Russian culture, and the peculiar path by which revolutionary ideology emerged in Russia. The work remains one of the most penetrating analyses of the Russian Revolution ever written, illuminating not only political history but the deeper moral and metaphysical currents that shaped it.
