Hardcover. Recent rebinding in grey fine woven cloth with simple title embossed in gilt on spine (along with date). New endpapers and pastedowns, 16, [2], Folding map, 557 pp. followed by 33 (+13, for a total of 23 sheets) of publisher's ads at rear. One folding map and 10 engravings, as called for, in proper locations. Map is not called for in the list of engravings but present in all copies that have the engravings if it has not been removed. There are two editions of this book: one has engravings and one does not. This particular copy appears to be towards the end of the printing or edition, as it has 13 pp of additional, unnumbered pages of publisher's ads after the 32 numbered pages. These additional pages contain the header "D. Appleton & Co.'s Educational Publications" on the top of the first 4 pp., then also pp. 7-12, with a header of ENGLISH AND AMERICAN BOOKS on the final (13th) page. This is a different header than is found on the first 33 numbered pages. While this book might look better in leather, or custom embossed black cloth, it is otherwise a superb copy with only one ownership stamp, very carefully and deliberately placed so as to minimize the affect on any nearby printed text, which betrays a kindness not often afforded by over-zealous librarians. Pictures upon request. Illustrations as follows: Inserted leaves: Monument at St. Francis' Barracks, St. Augustine (frontispiece) -- List of Engravings (facing p. 16) -- Coacoochee (Wild Cat) (facing p. 99 [98 on list]) -- Thlocklo Tustenuggee (Tiger-Tail) (facing p. 98 [99 on list]) -- Negro Abraham (facing p. 100) -- Oseola, or Powell (facing p. 101) -- Death of Waxehadjo (facing p. 254) -- Scene at Tampa Bay, Florida (facing p. 286) -- Castle of St. Mark, now called Fort Marion, St. Augustine (facing p. 337) -- Halleck Tustenuggee on the St. John's (facing p. 429) -- Gopher John, Seminole Interpreter (facing p. 459). Map is titled "Sketch of the Southern part of Florida." References: Servies, James A., and Lana D. Servies, Bibliography of Florida,; v. 2, 3352 (listing the edition with plates and map; noting edition without both).; Howes, W., U.S.iana, 1650-1950 (1962 edition), and others. VG, Binding is solid and attractively utilitarian. There is a 3" tear in one fold of the map, and minor foxing to the map perimeter areas. The text block is tight with minor age toning to perimeter edges and the engravings have nminor foxing. Overall a very nice exlibrary copy from the Cossitt Library in Memphis, TENN with their perforation stamp between the autghor's name and the publisher location on the title-page, with a red discard stamp over top of it.

First Edition Signed
First Edition. Original cloth binding. 557pp.+32 pages of advertisements at end of volume. 10 Plates. Large folding map. Covering in much detail, the period of 1821-1845, the author presents a comprehensive history of the war against the Seminole Indians in Florida. "The story of the wonderful contests of a savage tribe of less than four thousand, of all ages, in 1822, and less than one thousand in 1845, with the disciplined forces of the United States, for nearly a quarter of a century, is here told with all its minutest relations. It is a sad story of heroism, gallantry, and patriotism on the side of the Aborigines, and of treachery, unscrupulous covetousness, and barefaced lying on the part of the government and its officials; including the President, the Senate, and the generals in command. The great republic was only victor at last, by inveigling the Indian chiefs, under the most sacred promises of safe conduct, into imprisonment and chains; and after losing one hundred soldiers for every Indian taken or slain, forty-five millions of treasure were expended in reducing these seven hundred patriots."--Field 1475. Rubbing, general wear, and some soiling to cloth. Rebacked with original cloth spine laid-down. Occassional light foxing throughout. Map foxed with professional repair to tear on verso. A rare and important history. From the library of, and signed by, Bishop Whipple of Minnesota. An Episcopal priest, Henry Benjamin Whipple was consecrated first bishop of Minnesota in 1859. A new state, Minnesota was inhabited by 20,000 Indians, for whom Whipple had great sympathy. Bishop Whipple was a life-long advocate for the Indians, making many trips to Washington on their behalf. Protected in a cloth slipcase with gilt-stamped leather label on spine.
