Paperback. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: in illustrated wraps. Softcover, First Paperback Edition 1970 Pocket Books 442 pages. Good+, in illustrated wraps. Minor shelf/edge wear and a few scratches to covers, only flaws are a small damp stain to top edge of text block at the rear (does not affect reading of the text) and a slight shelf lean. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean with the exception of the above mentioned flaw. Monte Walsh is a classic Western, maybe the best ever written, and deserves to be read even by those who are not normally taken by the genre. It is a beautifully crafted period piece, describing the West and its cowboys during a time when it was in transition to modernity. But at its heart, it really is about those simple yet enduring themes: friendship, honor and duty. From Shaefer's elegant descriptions of the land, to his careful, humorous, and at times poignant portrayals of his characters, the book is a beautifully crafted masterpiece. Highly recommended to all lovers of Western Fiction. LOC SSS-32.

Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. A lovely, clean, tight and unread copy bound in brown paper-covered boards and a white woven cloth spine stamped brightly in brown and black. In a complete, pictorial dust jacket with a photo of Jack Schaefer featured on the rear panel. With the original price of $5.95 at the top of the inside front flap. There is some slight rubbing to the top and bottom of the dust jacket spine ends and a touch of wear at the corners, but no pieces missing. A small piece of clear tape, barely noticeable, has been applied at the top 1/2" of the dust jacket spine. Overall, a very handsome and collectible copy. "Monte Walsh, a good man with a horse. A man proud of his skills and of his independence, so suited to a particular way of life that he wishes no other. This is Montes story, told with affection and understanding and a sureness of touch that seems to say this is the way it really was. The story unfolds in a series of episodes, each one a small drama in itself. We follow Monte from runaway boy to trail hand, to topnotch cowhand and bronc buster, to aging saddle bum. We see in sharply drawn portraits his companions at the Slash Y, particularly Chet Rollins, his closest friend. Jack Warner Schaefer was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of an attorney. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1929 with a major in English. He attended graduate school at Columbia University from 192930, but left without completing his Master of Arts degree. He then went to work for the United Press. In his long career as a journalist, he would hold editorial positions at many eastern publications. Schaefer's first success as a novelist came in 1949 with his memorable novel Shane, set in Wyoming. Few realized that Schaefer himself had never been anywhere near the west. Nevertheless, he continued writing successful westerns, selling his home in Connecticut and moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1955.
